Eyelids surgery

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty  is among the most frequent interventions of Plastic Surgery. This procedure allow to correct the tired and old aspect of your eyes due to alterations around the eyes.

Although blepharoplasty is performed as single procedure, your surgeon might advice to perform it with another cosmetic surgery such as a brow-lift or facelift to improve droopy eyebrows, crow's feet, and facial sagging.

About the procedure

For the upper eyelids, your surgeon will draw the incisions following the line creases so scars are then disguised. The incision is made following these lines and the excess of fat, muscle and skin are then removed. Very fine sutures are utilized leaving a minimal scar.

For the lower eyelids, the incision is performed very close to the eyelashes and following the natural creases. Fatty tissue and excess of skin are removed from the baggy areas, which is less than the upper eyelid. The incision is closed in the same way.

It might be possible that there is fatty tissue but not excess of skin. In this case the surgeon may perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty with an incision inside the lower rim of the eye's skin. The surgeon then divides the fatty tissue and muscle from the skin so that excess skin, fat, or muscle can be removed.

Blepharoplasty takes normally between one or two hours.

After blepharoplasty surgery

Immediately after surgery, the eyes are not covered, although a frequent lubrication would be required.

A certain amount of swelling and bruises are normal. Use of cold compresses and keeping your head in an upward position when resting will improve discomfort. The doctor will also prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection.

During the first week the area will have to be kept clean as eyelashes tend to glue especially while sleeping.

Stiches are removed between two to five days after surgery.

Blepharoplasty Plastic surgery may restore a youthful and refreshed appearance to your eyes, that would last for many years. There are even patients for which results are permanent.
