About the Breast Reduction Procedure

Several techniques exist for breast reduction. The most common being the anchor incision, that performs and incision surrounding the nipple, then goes down vertically to the bottom of the breast, and finally a third incision runs on the underside of the breast just above the fold.

The Plastic Surgeon will remove the excess of tissue, fat and skin and will reposition the nipple and the areola to a new, upper position. Then the skin from both sides is joined an sutured, reshaping the breasts in the process. In the majority of cases, the nipples remain attached to the nerves and blood vessels.

On some occasions, a liposuction is utiizaed as a complement to lower the fat bellow the axila.

Stitches circumvent the areaol, follow the vertical line downwards and continue to the bottom of the breast, although some techniques this long scar is avoided by a special folding of the skin along the vertical incision.

After the surgery

Arter the surgery you will wear elastic bandages or gauzes with a surgical bra. It is customary to leave a surgical drain to help remove excess fluids for a day or two.

At the beginning you might experience pain, especially if you cough or move, so you will be prescribed for treating pain.  Bandages will be removed two days after the procedures. You will be using a bra all day for several weeks. Stitches will be removed on the second or third week.

An initial loss of sensitivity might be experienced in your nipples and skin caused by the swelling of your breasts. You would normally recover it after about six weeks.

Although you might be able to stand up and walk within one or two days after surgery, your breasts will be sore, swollen, and bruised for two weeks. You will avoid lifting or pushing heavy objects for three to four weeks.

The majority of women return to light-work  and social activities within two weeks. Probably you will feel loosen for a several weeks and you will need an athletic bra during this period. If you experiment accute pain or bleeding, you should contact your surgeon immediately.

We will do our best to keep your scars to a minimum, but you have to keep in mind that with breast reduction scars are significant and permanent. Normally the remain think and red for several months and after that they gradually pale becoming less visible.

Of all the plastic surgery procedures, this is the one that gives the most immediate change to your body shape. You will feel relieved from the discomfort that your bigger breast generated, your body will have a more proportional shape and your clothing will look significantly better.

Back to normal life

No matter how intensely you desired this change, do not forget that you will need to allow time for yourself, your family and your friends to adapt to your new shape.
